I have been insured with Admiral since June last year, and recieved my renewal through today.

There quote was £525.00 exactly. I thought, hmm not bad for a renewal quote, not too much more than comparison sites which were quoting from around £450 upwards.

Under the OPTIONAL EXTRAS (!), it then lists Insurance Premium Tax at £31.50, so there actual renewal quote is £556 - £31 more than on the top of the letter!

Is it just me - or is that a bit of a crafty way to make themselves look cheaper than they actually are?

Also, around a month ago Watchdog reported on how renewal prices were cheaper if you got a quote as a new customer. If you try and get a quote on their website now as an existing customer, it tells you to call the renewal line and refuses to quote - so you cannot check if you are getting a good price with them or not!

A bit naughty. FSA guidelines state the renewal price offered should include the tax, and it should be clearly laid out as such.

I also tried to get a quote on line as renewal price was dear, you cant do it anymore. We shopped around and got it a lot cheaper mind you am having problems trying to get new policy online with Aviva it wont take payment. Hubby did ring Admiral to cancel and they did offer to knock £40 off but still £100 more than what Aviva quoted so have left them.

I can't think of any reason that IPT would be optional. As Mikey says, renewal offer has to be clear but they could of course detail the IPT separately as long as the total is clear.

I would like to know what they say if you ring up to renew and decline the optional IPT. I'll bet HMRC would like to know that Admiral regard it as optional.

Dont click the exisiting, just click new quote and its fine do it every year

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

You can do a new quote on their website (not comparison sites until 3 weeks before for some reason).

I always get given a really high renewal price through the post but have never had a problem getting the quote down on the phone - don't even have to ask! This time round all I said was I'd found quotes on comparison sites (for other companies) for over £500 cheaper, guy on the end of the phone pressed a few buttons and matched it. Just be careful if you do online documents that the documents update - had to spend 20 mins on the phone tonight as original guy didn't submit the renewal properly and it was still going to charge me the original price!!

Got it sorted - Going with Hastings direct who quoted £395pa. Admiral dropped from £550 to £480 but could would not go any lower, so their loss!

I have also found that if you miss spell your surname on the admiral quote system it does not pick up on you being an existing customer and therefore allows you to get a new customer quote - Which in my case was about £5 cheaper than my renewal.

If Admiral won't provide quotes to existing customers, then try Elephant or Diamond. Its the same company, the policies are the same, you will even find its the same people you talk too.
